RENO MY RENO! Canadians fix people’s home improvement mistakes and are super nice about it but FIRM with man who don’t finish projects!

so far some shows that have worked for me:

Lord & Ladles – scottish chefs cook historical feasts in historical mansions! you meet wacky old money people and learn about strange things their ancestors got up to! you get to watch as world-renowned chefs fail at catching a fish! someone makes a hedgehog out of marzipan! people in the olden times ate some crazy shit! every episode ends with the chefs cheersing each other while lying on vintage furniture!

Big Dreams, Small Spaces – cute british people have cute yards that cute gardening man helps to make into much cuter yards. one lady wants to grow vegetables to share with her neighborhood. one lady wants to sculpt a huge mud head covered in moss coming out of the ground. one dad wants a garden for his down’s syndrome kid so he makes a sensory garden with a thousand different smells and textures. one couple wants to grow flowers for their wedding. it’s all wonderful.

Nailed It! – a bunch of people probably got high and decided to throw money at this show idea. everybody tries their best and everybody comes away either having learned something helpful, having had a rollicking good time, or having won a bunch of money. all the judges are good sports and nobody is made to feel bad for doing bad. also there’s some fucking crazy shit they get up to with modeling chocolate i tell you what.

Skin Wars – actually a lot about artists and their craft??? not really at all about sexy ladies being naked??? very cool stuff done by people with atrocious fashion sense and a complete willingness to buy into the moment. a few bad apples but mostly the reality-show-ness is pretty toned down and people are there to make cool art.

A Cook Abroad – chefs go to different parts of the world and learn about food there. A dumb white guy makes bread with adorable egyptian ladies! A british man gets exhausted by the length of roads in argentina and is only recharged by steak! An awesome woman makes cheese in france!

Love Your Garden – british man does garden makeovers for wholesome deserving families with special needs. Maybe a little bit on the weepy side of things but his assistants are all great and have fantastic hairstyles and people in wheelchairs deserve flowers!

Puffin Rock – this show is supposedly for babies but it is SO PRETTY and SO CHARMING and it’s about animals and nature and stuff and doesn’t really completely shy away from that?? like, one of the characters is a little rodent and the seagulls are the bad guys and he’s actually afraid of getting eaten?? anyway baby birds sing songs with baby bunnies and play splishsplash with baby seals and snuggle with baby animals of all sorts in a beautiful hand painted island.

Animal Airport – hey did you know some crazy shit goes down in Heathrow?? Did you know that there isn’t rabies in the UK? Everyone’s doggies and kitties have a long trip but they all get home in the end and also there are turtles and cheetahs and bugs and fish and everything!!!

this list is so relevant to my interests it hurts.

i’d also suggest the bbc historical farms series–it’s not on netflix, but it *is* mostly on youtube. the metafilter guide that originally introduced me to it is here. there are a bunch of different series of it, now, and each one is a group of archaeologists and historians living on a period location–victorian farm, they live in a farmhouse from the era, and they farm and raise animals and etc wearing period clothing, using period tools and sources as guides. and it sounds like it could be cringey, but they’re all experts in their fields and actually really invested in trying to do things well, so instead it’s a bunch of shows about teamwork and being friends (most of the core team stays the same) and learning things, and it’s delightful.

similarly, the sweet makers and victorian bakers have modern confectioners and bakers recreating period foods wearing appropriate clothing and using cookbooks from the era to guide them. (warning that one of the sweet makers episodes deals heavily with the history of sugar, and the slavery and horrific abuses associated with the same.)

If you want something positive, somewhat peaceful, and food craft related to watch on YouTube, look up loftypursuits (they make candy if you’re unfamiliar) and manaboutcakes (I might have a bit of a crush on the host)

I need my Netflix to have this category.

While I’m at it, I need Netflix to have the ability to make, curate and share playlists. Why isn’t that a thing?

Arctic horror series ‘The Terror’ is one of the best new shows of 2018

hellotailor:

The Terror falls somewhere between Master and Commander and John Carpenter’s The Thing, a historical adventure series with a lurking supernatural threat. Based on the novel by Dan Simmons, it’s a reimagining of the infamous Franklin expedition of 1845, when two British Navy ships set out to discover the Northwest Passage.

The expedition was a disaster. In fact, it’s one of the most alarming stories in the history of polar exploration, a genre littered with frostbite, shipwrecks, and people having to eat their dogs. Since The Terror was inspired by historical fact, it’s not a huge spoiler to say that Franklin and his crew went missing.

Lost in miles of bleak ice in northern Canada, the two ships weren’t found until 2014 and 2016. Everything else we know comes from Inuit oral histories and scraps of physical evidence, leaving plenty of room for juicy speculation. The Terror follows the expedition’s journey from heroic venture to nightmarish catastrophe, with a stellar cast and only one significant flaw: The monster isn’t really necessary.

Is My Hero Academia really worth watching? What do you have to be a fan of to also like this; as in what’s a similar thing people like that’s popular that correlates to this?

pearl-likes-pi:

Yes!! I love it!! I think it’s a refreshingly simple story with characters that are easy to understand and fairly straightforward, but they’re all so vibrant and diverse that it doesnt really bother you that they’re painting in broad strokes. you have

Fearsome Gravity Daughter

anxious icy-and-spicy boy

frog daughter

beautiful spiky sunshine shark boy

and many more, but i think the selling point for a lot of people (me included) is the protaganist, Deku. who is a total fanboy, cries every episode, and has a heart of gold despite being totally disadvantaged in the story. he just does does best and im so proud of him every Single day

These are just like 4 of the 20 kids in Class 1-A, so you also have class 1-B, all their parents, all the teachers and pro heroes in the world, so you can see how it gets really interesting seeing all their different powers and personalities

Look heres scarecrow dad

sleeping bag homeroom teacher dad

also the production value is really good esp for shounen! Filler is at a minimum so it moves along really fast for an anime. And when they want to kick the animation in to high gear, They Don’t Pull Any Punches. If you like action series, esp shounen (like Naruto or One Piece) then it’s a shoe-in. The action and Good Kiddos just takes me back to ATLA days. Personally I’d hardly watched any anime before I started this one so I think it’s really accessible (it’s essentially a Japanese take on a story inspired by American comic books so it takes a lot of cues from there)

Theres obviously downsides to it as well but i think it’s still worth the watch for sure. Season 3 just started back again yesterday so it’s the perfect time to hop on the train!

A lot of guys think “toxic masculinity” is a demonisation of all things masculine, but there’s a reason why it’s called “toxic masculinity” and not just “masculinity”. In Denmark we have two shows that illustrate the difference clearly.

The first pictures are from a show called “Real Men”. It’s basically about men who are so controlled by toxic masculinity it’s killing them. They refuse to eat greens because ew, real men only eat meat. They drink too much alcohol and drive everywhere because god forbid they do any kind of exercise because that’s gay/womanly. They’re so afraid of looking feminine it’s slowly destroying their lives. The show then tries to teach them a healthier way of life so they can be there for their families, especially their children.

The second set of pictures are from a show called “Shoot and Eat”. It’s a hunting and cooking show in one. The older hunter has to shoot an animal with the help of the younger cook who will then prepare the animal with the help of the hunter. In between they do things like build stuff, try new types of beer, have fun with gadgets, goof around and chill in nature. It’s a celebration of the masculine without the toxic part. They don’t ridicule women and the feminine while they have fun with their man stuff. It’s one of the longest running programs here because it’s popular with women too. You see, women don’t mind men being masculine, they just don’t like toxic macho boys who constantly put women down to feel more important.

Occasionally the young cook will worry a bit about looking feminine but the hunter is having non of that. At one point they had to braid rope to build a bigger thing and the cook asked “Isn’t this a bit girly?” and the hunter just responded “I love braiding. It’s so relaxing” There, drink your beer and shut up, boy.

So masculinity? Yeeeeeessssssss.
Toxic masculinity? It’s literally ruining lives.
