BOOKS READ IN 2018: The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
“All I wanted to do was lie in the dry grass with my feet in a ditch forever. I could be a convenient sort of milemarker, I thought. Get to the thief and you know you’re halfway to Methana.”
when gen says ‘you are my queen’ to attolia, it’s because she asks him ‘who am i, that you should love me?’
the obvious answer here is ‘you’re the woman that cut my hand off’
this is how she sees herself, this is how she sees how gen sees her. this is insurmountable. this is why they shouldn’t get married.
if gen admitted at all to ‘more than anything else, i think of you as the woman that hurt me, even though i also love you very much’ then it would be game over. if it wasn’t about revenge now, it would be in the future.
he’s not saying he’s not afraid, but gen defends that what she did was within her rights as queen more than once.
to profess the loyalty she admired about him but knew she did not have is gen saying this isn’t about revenge. what you did isn’t the driving force here. it’s my love for you.
this is the hope that she can be happy with gen, because he can be happy with her in spite of their past and they can live with it.
