Yes, I’m sure the person with a wheat allergy wanting to avoid putting wheat containing things near their eyeballs is truly the reason society is failing.

Also if anyone does actually need gluten free mascara, Zuzu Luxe is one of the best I’ve been able to find. Hardly clumps and doesn’t flake off like a lot of the others. Their other products can be a little hit or miss texture wise, but the mascara is great.

I once saw a person point out that common allergens are in so many things, and it even has to do with “this facility uses it in another product but it’s still the same facility” and I stopped laughing. And then I felt bad. I was ignorant, but I didn’t think about like. My corn tortillas better not have gluten! They’re corn! And then I realized….same facility. Airborne particulates. Someone working on one line, accidentally dropping particulates in another line just by walking past.

Cause there are people who are *that* sensitive. And they deserve to be protected and have safe products.

I specifically do not take issue with people just not knowing things. Cause why the heck would anyone know things like that unless they ever had to? Why would you know wheat is a common ingredient in things like mascara or shampoo? I sure as shit didn’t till I started to piece together why my body went into meltdown every time I washed my hair.

What does get to me is how inherently shitty some people are about it. Like why is the first go to for things like this mockery? Why? I mean I know the answer is “society is inherently abelist even if people don’t realize they are doing it” but I’m still allowed to be frustrated by it. (It’s the same with infomercials. Those products are not lazy or worthless, they are designed for people with disabilities!)

And I know this seems like such an over reaction to something like someone in Walgreens being shitty over gluten free mascara haha. But it’s so much more than that.
So much of my daily life is emotional and mental labor just trying to spoon feed people how not to be unthinkingly mean all the time. And
it’s not like I can ever stop because this is my life. I am living in a
world not designed or meant to include me, so constant emotional and
mental labor is required to justify both myself and the things that make
my life easier.

And I wish people would just think with a little more kindness sometimes. That’s all.

Hey uh so, full disclosure here, my dad is gluten intolerant/has celiac disease, and I didn’t know that having non-food gluten-free products was important too… I thought it only affected you if you ate the thing.

So then I think the problem is that people don’t know enough about gluten-free and think it’s some fad, because if you’re not gluten intolerant/cursed with celiac disease, then going gluten-free has no benefits, right? (not knowing these things still doesn’t excuse people mocking others’ needs, though.)

The thing is neither do a lot of people with celiac disease. It’s not something all doctors mention to their patients as a possible source for issue or contamination (why? usually because the doctor diagnosing it will be a GI doctor and not always an immunologist, and that’s a problem cause celiac is an auto-immune disease), so a lot of us wind up wondering why we are still presenting with flare ups and other issues when our diet is so strict and we do everything we can to control symptoms through diet.

The latest trend of using wheat by-product to make compostable paper plates and cups has me on edge too, cause I’ve been handed a cup of water in one of those cups at a venue before and not realized until I’ve drank most of it and felt my throat start to constrict and realized that I am in Danger. And I’d have never known Why if the person hadn’t started talking about their cool hippy biodegradable cups which I thought were paper, but were paper spliced with wheat-by-product.

And the thing is, those things are marketed as “allergen safe” cause in theory the protein has been processed to death, but as anyone with severe allergies or celiac will tell you, even the smallest, tiniest amount can be enough to trigger a reaction.

So you’re right, not enough people understand what it is, or how severe it can be. And you could argue that part of this is because people treat it like a fad diet and a thing to be mocked vs say, a peanut allergy where people (though not everyone) respects the severity of what that can entail. But honestly, given how prevalent wheat allergy has become in the last couple of decades, it doesn’t surprise me that a lot of people, even those without actual celiac, have found some sort of relief through cutting out wheat products (ie their issue is not necessarily gluten but wheat) so in all honesty, who gives a shit. Allergies, diseases and yes, even food preferences need to be fucking respected. Which they currently are not.

It’s best to have someone do this for you while you stand up and relax your muscles as best you can, but if you’re alone, a tennis ball and a flat surface will probably work. Alternatively you can lie on the edge of a bed at the pressure point. (But no really do try to find someone to do it for you)

Find the area in your spine between either the first, second, third, or fourth vertebrae. It should be sore and uncomfortable to press down on, so look for the one that’s most painful, and press down with as much pressure as you can on that area for 30 seconds.

Realize that 80% of your pain has magically disappeared and keep the info secret if you live in a small puritan town, lest you be tried for witchcraft.

If you don’t have to worry about being burned or hanged, then share the info with your migraine suffering friends.

As someone who wrote a 10k word paper on pressure points for a high belt ranking test in her martial arts class, I can tell you that you just found a pressure point used in acupressure and acupuncture to relieve pain, particularly that in the head. 🙂

As a medical massage therapist, I thought I would give my two cents.

This is good for tension migranes and normal migraines, but actually pretty useless for sinus migraines. It’ll help for a hot second, but quickly come back. (These are usually the migraines behind your eyes, in your ears, and behind your forehead. Sometimes it can feel like jaw pain or TMJ) for sinus migraines, behind the ear in a divot. Press down firmly and pull towards your collarbone. That’ll drain your sinuses. Also, pressing around the eye socket on the cheekbones help. There is also a little triangle up away from the eye in the eyebrow bone. Press and hold pretty hard and that’ll relieve that behind the forehead pain. Also, ear pulling is great to help move sinuses around.

Don’t forget the temples too! Press firmly and hold. Open and close your jaw while holding your temples. It’ll feel weird, but it’ll help with jaw pain. It’ll work a similar way if you hold the jaw joint under your cheekbone.

And never underestimate the power of a foot massage!! Give minutes can be all the difference!! Our feet are our base. If they hurt even a little, somewhere else in your body will hurt. Treat your feet and sinuses kindly!

here’s a reminder that if you aren’t eating properly, you aren’t thinking properly. you won’t be able to control your intrusive thoughts. your emotions will overtake you. you won’t be able to verbalize how you feel, which will frustrate you even more. until you’re nourished and healthy again, your illness will continue to take hold. the only way out is to eat.

if any of my followers are interested in science, there’s actually a biological reason this happens. when the body is under attack (extreme stress, malnutrition, etc), higher function thinking (prefrontal cortex of the brain) doesn’t work as efficiently. this means that you’re not able to make smart decisions, your judgement is distorted, you can’t regulate emotions, and you won’t be able to process new information as well

instead, all your higher function thinking is sent to your midbrain. the amygdala (the part of your brain that produces strong emotions, including fight/flight) will manage your feelings, rather than the prefrontal cortex. this means you’re more likely to react strongly to triggers, and potentially in a dangerous way. your striatum, responsible for muscle memory and habitual action, is also handling functions it shouldn’t. when triggered, instead of using your skills to move forward in a healthy way, it’s much more likely that you’ll revert to old habits

the ONLY way to redirect thinking back to the prefrontal cortex is to break the cycle. it’s easier not to eat, or engage in other behaviors, but until you can regulate your intake, this pattern will continue

Needles from a professional are designed to allow for minimum damage thus less pain.

The people working there literally have no idea what the fuck they’re doing and just guess it with a 1 hour training video vs a professional who trained under a mentor for at least a year and has a passion in the craft

They use bad metal for healings (copper, silver, etc) that can irritate ears. Surgical grade steel should be the only thing in your healing piercings

They put them on way to tight, causing swelling issues. Swelling is normal and piercings should be large enough to allow for that

They give you shit aftercare advice and cleaner (literally just buy saline solution at Spencer’s or hot topic for 8 dollars at the most and don’t touch them at all)

If done on cartilage it can LITERALLY SHATTER YOUR EARS

Please if any young girls in your family want their ears pierced take them to actual professional and don’t trust piercing guns. If a professional says your kid is too young (I.e a fucking baby) then trust their professional judgement. It costs more but you are getting essentially a art piece from a highly trained professional who knows what they’re doing vs a part time min wage employee who had 1 hour training on how to pierce ears.

I literally wrote an entire essay in college why piercing guns should be banned with pictures and my professor told me she was so interested in my topic and had no idea and even googled the topic herself out of curiosity and was horrified on the amount of damage they case

I am a licensed piercing professional and this is all sound and accurate advice. Get your piercings done by a licensed professional at a reputable shop. Not at the mall kiosk that uses piercing guns. Not by your friend who ordered a kit off of Amazon.

if you mention health in your recipe, i will assume the recipe is Austerity Food and does not taste very good. i will not give the recipe a chance. i will not try it. there are fifty thousand other search results. i will continue searching until i find a recipe that appears to be written with the intent of making food that tastes as good as possible, and also doesn’t expect me to do something like scramble three eggs in a single teaspoon of flavorless oil.

by the way, a piece of life advice: a generous splash of olive oil will keep the eggs from sticking to the pan (i know you burnt three or four batches before you got that pretty picture), taste really good (FAT IS FLAVOR say all the real chefs), is good for your heart (yes really), and if you’re on a diet (which you shouldn’t be) you can burn off that many calories by folding a basket of laundry. it’s not like you shanked an orphan. please calm the fuck down.

It takes far more than that to burn a “generous” amount of olive oil. While it may not be terrible for you, it’s still an increase in caloric intake.

fatphobia is the reason I didn’t know until Jesse started posting about it that most of my weight gain is from not getting ENOUGH calories.

since adding ~200 calories a day to my food intake i have had more energy, had an easier time working out, done longer and more productive workouts, and in 2 weeks i have gained noticeable muscle tone. not from trying to live on chia seeds and kale, but from eating regular food like egg and toast for breakfast, pbj and fruit for lunch, chicken and rice for supper, and adding a high-protein snack like yogurt and red bean jam or cheese and nuts.

diet culture is just purity theater. calorie counting is cargo cult medicine. your body wants to be active and healthy, stop punishing it and start cooperating with it.

i’m gonna bring this back. if you’re struggling with your weight, try ADDING a small snack to your daily intake. your body is probably in famine mode and conserving energy, storing every spare calorie as fat under the assumption that you’re experiencing famine conditions and the food is running out.

repeat: dieting convinces your body there’s a famine.

your body responds by hoarding calories.

this is an evolved survival trait.

you will be fat and fatigued because your metabolism is preparing for weeks or months with no food at all.

stop starving yourself. it’s not working.

The diet and fitness health industries are basically a two-man con. Diet says: you’re so fat, cut your calories. Fitness says: you’re so out of shape, you need to exercise more. So you cut your daily caloric intake to 1500, and you go to the gym, and you can barely go fifteen minutes before your heart is pounding and you can’t catch your breath and you’re about to fall off your treadmill, what is wrong with you? How do you fix this?

Diet says: You’re so fat! Cut calories!

Fitness says: You’re so out of shape! Exercise more!

You need energy to exercise. The energy content of food is measured in calories.

It’s a brilliant way to part people from their money, and also slowly suck all the vitality out of them. Like, seriously. The average adult human burns over a calorie a minute just paying the metabolic rent on having a warm-blooded body. There are 1440 minutes in a day. If you want to get fit, that’s a great goal, but don’t do it while cutting your caloric intake down to starvation levels. Calories are literally energy. You need energy to exercise. You need energy to live.

this is a great addition. between all my disabilities, it’s hard for me to get enough food, even with barb and seebs helping. when i’m having a good day and can fill in the gaps myself, and i get up somewhere near the 2600 calories an adult male my age needs, i get this amazing rush of energy. if i can keep this up a few days running, i noticeably put on muscle.

after that last run of prednisone ended, when i was feeling so healthy, i ate everything in sight for a solid three or four days. a week later, when they weighed me at the clinic, i’d lost ten pounds.

why? because instead of having to twist my own arm to exercise, i stayed an extra fifteen minutes in the pool, then took a walk in the evening. just because i felt energetic! i helped more with chores, played more with the cats, got next to seebs more, and in general just did more stuff, then slept better at night and woke up easier in the morning.

now, a lot of that was the prednisone. but my arms are bigger and i can lift more than two weeks ago, and that doesn’t come out of a blister pak.

eat enough. you will exercise more.

by the way – if you’re about to add a comment reminding everyone not to stuff their face with cake, or flatly stating that something i’ve said is wrong without providing any evidence or counterargument, ask yourself what your motivation is.

Summer’s coming, and with it, sweat.

Sweat is the worst. There’s things out there to make sweat season better, though. Without further ado, my “sweat sucks” checklist, in no particular order! All product names are links- mostly Amazon- but you can get many of these items in a lot of places.

0, the ur-anti-sweat task force item. A good anti-perspirant of your choice. If you’re sweaty and you hate it, you probably already know which one you like best.

1. Gold Bond powder spray. The powder itself is ok, but the spray is where it’s at. If you hate underboob sweat, this is the way to go. Start dry- don’t do this right after a shower, and towel off if you’ve already been sweating. Before putting on a bra or binding, lift one boob, spray underneath, and hold that boob up for a bit to let the spray dry. There’s other things that work for this, too- Fresh Balls, Monkey Butt, etc.- and I have tried all of them and this is the one I keep reaching for. Also, Fresh Balls and Monkey Butt are terrible names.

Just don’t use it on any mucus membranes. If you’ve got a sweaty groin area, be careful with it.

2. Slipshorts. Recently I stopped hating myself and wearing pants in the summer. It’s just too humid out. But a combo of chub rub and sweat means that I feel super uncomfortable if I’m not wearing something– which is where a nice pair of undershorts/bike shorts come in handy. Get cotton ones or wicking ones, and they help combat the sweat and the chafing. Jockey’s Skimmies are really good for this- the ones that wick away moisture. This is not shapewear, mind you- that would only make the sweat problem worse! 

3. A fan. I’ve got a really goofy electric one that mists me with water, but it looks really, really goofy. It might look silly, but it let me survive my family’s ill-planned hike up Diamond Head in the middle of the day. That was worth looking silly. When I’m super hot and gross, I don’t care- but it’s not convenient everywhere, or you might have more dignity than me. (Most people probably do, really.) In that case, a folding fan is extremely useful. Pick one that you like- if you carry purses, maybe even get a few cheap ones and toss one in each purse.  

4. Another kind of goofy thing that really does work is the Cooldanna, which is a bandanna that’s been sewn into a head band and stuffed with water crystals. You soak it in water, tie it around your head, and it keeps you cool for a very long time. If you were clever, you could make your own with some water polymer crystals and whatever fabric you liked- and this way you’d have more control over design and size and everything. You could even get creative about shape and placement!

5. Around April, I stop wearing closed shoes unless I absolutely have to- sandals all the way for me. I’m a Birkenstocks person, but honestly, any supportive sandal’s good. I’ve had the same pair of Milanos for well over a decade now, and they don’t stink and my feet feel pretty damn good in them.

6. A Ta-Ta Towel. It’s not fun to wear a bra all the time, but it’s equally unfun to be sitting at home and dealing with underboob sweat. You can get these other places, or make your own even, or if your boobs are shaped right, just stick a washcloth beneath them and call it a day- but nothing dries quite like a towel. 

7. Bun formers. Getting the hair off the back of the neck is vital, and a bun works pretty much anywhere.

8. Cucumber wipes and a towel. Sometimes if I have to walk or take the bus somewhere in the summer, I’ll actually take face-washing stuff with me in my bag so that I can de-sweat when I get there. If not, cucumber wipes and a small towel work fine. 

Sweaty friends: save a life. If you’ve got more things you like to use, please add to the list.

…That’s going to apply also to anyone whose recent ancestors voluntarily dieted a lot, isn’t it. Diet culture long-term causes more obesity. Sure, it takes decades to show up, but anything you’d hear today about childhood obesity would reflect that. Exercising is still very good for most people, but trying to lose weight shouldn’t be the goal for most people, because a) it usually doesn’t work very well or it comes back and b) your kids or grandkids could end up with extra wonky metabolisms. (And while fat itself is actually not that much of a problem if you keep your fitness up, it can be hard on your joints. That’s actually the biggest health risk if you’re “small end of fat,” under 40, and active–joint problems.)

the ‘obesity epidemic’ in america is probably due to a combo of our grandparents living through the great depression and our parents being teens and young adults during the days of twiggy and heroin chic and the rise of diet culture.

combine that with the fact that gen x was the last generation allowed to play outside, pretty much, and the fact that everybody nowdays is working service jobs that exhaust them without working their muscles, and there is basically no way on earth you’re going to get a fit and healthy population without changing the basic structure of our society.

don’t fall for the hype. don’t focus on weight. it’s actually far more dangerous to be underweight than overweight. even with what is clinically defined as ‘morbid obesity’ it’s possible to be healthy as a horse, if your bone structure and metabolism are set up for it and you’ve got lots of muscle to support it.

on top of that, the charts for ideal weight are at least a generation out of date. they were compiled based on a population that didn’t regularly get enough dairy and fresh produce, at a time when girls didn’t do athletics in school. young women in the 1960′s were measurably smaller than young women today. their bones were thinner, they had less muscle mass, their shoulders were more sloped, they had a smaller lung capacity – society discouraged them from being physically active past the age of ten or twelve, and they finished their physical development in a sedentary setting.

boys were plenty active, but just like the girls, they were eating just about nothing but red meat and starch and some mushy greens with the vitamins boiled out. the thing where the poor get fat because sugar and fat are cheap wasn’t really happening yet, especially in rural areas; a farm kid’s diet was beef and wheat in the north, pork and corn in the south. “eat your vegetables” was such a hard sell because everything else was expensive and bland and overcooked. you’ve seen the godawful cookbook excerpts from that time. mushy green beans and fried spam on a bed of mashed potatoes, seasoned with nothing but a pinch of white pepper.

sorry, that was kind of a tangent. i guess my point is, even the people who ate well by the standards of the time were malnourished compared to the standard of today. your lunch of a matcha cucumber smoothie and a cobb salad with one ounce of ham, one ounce of turkey, and 15 kinds of fresh vegetable, would give them the explosive shits because they’ve never had that much fiber in one place before. there’s more vitamins and antioxidants in your black bean fajita dinner than they saw in a week.

so first of all, the idea of trying to be the same size and shape they were is absurd.

and second, if malnourishment in one generation primes the next two for protective fat retention, the combination of that and the incredible wealth of nutrition we have available to us today is obviously going to make us HYUGE.

instead of fighting it, we should embrace it. we could all be HUMAN BOULDERS OF MIGHT.

Seriously. I’ve been underweight most of my life (childhood/growing years) and I have heart problems now. Like eating is no joke. I have difficulty identifying being too full as opposed to just full and although i love food and eating I will simply forget to eat because the hungry feeling is familiar and doesn’t register as important. And it’ll send me out of whack I miss one or two meals and I get physically sick. I can’t dance for more 3-5 minutes at a time without a twice is long break. (I love dancing-its my prime exercise)

Like I’ve know people on all sides. I knew someone struggling with being overweight and those problems right alongside mine. This adtitude hurts alot of people, I have been told I look great and beautiful, while 5 minutes before I had been light headed from walking up a flight of stairs.

Its scary when you faint in public and they give you an apple to go on your way. And someone that same day or next is like… You look so great!

I feel like shit! Thanks! It reinforces bad habits and thoughts for everyone.

If you had a recent ancestor who went through starvation it actually altered their genetics and may have passed down genes to you that make you hold on to fat. So this tweet is more accurate than you’d think.

…That’s going to apply also to anyone whose recent ancestors voluntarily dieted a lot, isn’t it. Diet culture long-term causes more obesity. Sure, it takes decades to show up, but anything you’d hear today about childhood obesity would reflect that. Exercising is still very good for most people, but trying to lose weight shouldn’t be the goal for most people, because a) it usually doesn’t work very well or it comes back and b) your kids or grandkids could end up with extra wonky metabolisms. (And while fat itself is actually not that much of a problem if you keep your fitness up, it can be hard on your joints. That’s actually the biggest health risk if you’re “small end of fat,” under 40, and active–joint problems.)
