For as much complaining, joking, and even objective analyzing people do concerning how…young Luke comes across in the first acts of A New Hope, I’ve yet to see anyone actually give him credit for staying home on Tatooine and fulfilling his obligations to his aunt and uncle, despite how frustrated, stifled, and bored out of his mind he was. I mean, he was 19, he was grown (enough), he could’ve just been like, Screw this, I’m outta here, and ditched them. Aunt Beru was even sympathetic to his plight. But Luke was loyal to her and Owen, sucked it up, and took care of his responsibilities. Never mind that Owen was most likely repeatedly adding responsibilities and moving the goalposts on when Luke could leave because he didn’t want him to leave because he was trying to keep him safe on Tatooine because he knew things about Luke that Luke was still unaware of… Because Luke didn’t know all that, he just knew that his aunt and uncle need for him to help on the farm outweighed how much they cared about how held back he felt. So he stayed, and he was bored, and he did his chores, and he eked out bits of relative fun when he could, and when the weird old wizard hermit man who claimed to have known his dead father invited him on a mission presented by a beautiful princess from a far-off planet, he was like, No. I can’t just up and leave my family and my place here. It took tragically losing his family and his place and having nothing left to stay for before he would “accept the call”. But before that, Luke was reliable and dutiful as hell. As well as very respectful and loyal to the people who raised him–basically his adoptive parents. Even in the face of his growing frustration and wanderlust. And that’s something to be admired and commended. That’s a strength of character. So just saying, it’d be nice to see more recognition of that in between the constant snickering about Tosche Station. It’s been 40 years, we get it. Now credit where credit is due.

here’s a compilation of different people driving box trucks into a low bridge over and over

It’s worth knowing a few fun facts, courtesy of 11foot8.com:

  • They can’t raise the bridge because it’s a train trestle, and raising it would require closing and modifying miles of busy track.
  • They can’t lower the road because it’s directly over a sewer main.
  • They can’t ban trucks entirely because there are too many local deliveries.
  • That section of road has a speed limit of 25 mph, numerous signs alerting drivers to the 11’8" limit, and recently they added a sensor that activates the stoplight and a flashing “overheight warning” sign so that drivers have to stop and think really hard about going forward.
  • The clearance is actually nearly three inches more than 11’8", the maximum deviation from the signage allowed.
  • Trucks have been getting stuck or damaged since the 1960s.

The guy who runs the website (and owns the cameras) says he sees a lot more trucks pull up to the stoplight, look at the warnings, and turn off onto the side road, but about once a month, someone hits the bridge.

Man I know emulators are technically considered piracy I guess, and I can see why it would be an issue with newer games (not that most emulators are advanced enough for that anyway), but I just… hhhhhh the way the video game industry operates in regards to old games is so fucking stupid. It’s like

Gamers: Hey, I’m really interested in this game you made a long time ago! Can I play it?
Game companies: No. 
Gamers: But I’ll give you money!
Game companies: We no longer manufacture, support, or distribute that game or the console it’s available on. There’s no way for you to buy it.
Gamers: Well, what about this slightly-newer-but-still-outdated game that was never released in my region? Can I play that? I’ll give you money.
Game companies: No. You’re only allowed to play games from your region. You can’t buy it from us.
Gamers: So, you don’t provide any way for me to purchase these games from you, or to play them in any form?
Game companies: Correct. We don’t care about these games anymore. They might as well not exist.
Some guy on the internet: Hey, I found some old and foreign games that aren’t sold or available to play anywhere, so I fixed them up so everyone can play them now for free! Here you go! 🙂
Game companies: ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOT. HOW DARE YOU STEAL OUR PROFITS. PLAY THE GAMES LEGALLY OR DIE.
