Ed and Winry really try to keep their wedding small and simple – because Winry likes simplicity and Ed’s a little tired of being in the public eye. So, the original guest list is pretty small – Pinako and Al and Izumi and Sig and Mason are all there as family, of course, and the Hughes both get an invite, with Elicia taking the role of flower girl. Paninya’s the Maid of Honor and she stubbornly insists on wearing a dress she is insanely uncomfortable in no matter how many times Winry insists she doesn’t need to. (She’s never been a Maid of Honor before!!! She’s stubborn and going to do it how she thinks it’s supposed to be done.) Mr. Garfiel of course gets an invite.

the problem is that Ed has too many friends. He has more friends than he thinks he does, more friends than he even thinks he KNOWS. And every single one of them wants to come.

all of Team Mustang definitely shows up and they’re ALL offended they didn’t get invites (since only Roy and Riza did – Ed of course makes a big deal about not wanting to invite Roy, but everyone knows there was no way in hell he wasn’t going to invite him.) Ed hears about it like 20 times just during the bachelor party (which he wasn’t even planning to have, honestly, but they just dragged him to the bar and started ordering beers and reminiscing about old missions and sure it’s FUN and he’s like, one of the guys for real now that he’s not a teenager, and sure he loves them, but seriously guys you can’t just show up, we don’t have any rooms or food for you)

the Ice Queen of Briggs herself shows up. No one’s really sure if she’s that fond of Ed or if it’s just an excuse to screw with Mustang. (Ed tries to give her a wide berth but she tags along to his bachelor party and drinks every single member of Team Mustang under the table.) Her brother surprises absolutely no one by also showing up and weeping through the entire ceremony. (they sit with the Curtises. Ed’s horrified to see just how well his teacher and Olivier get along)

Maria Ross and Denny Brosh definitely come, but they’re polite enough to ask Ed if it’s alright beforehand, and of course they know it’s not polite to invite themselves, but surely he didn’t leave them out on purpose right?? not after risking their lives and jobs for him with the Fifth Laboratory, right??? Maria turns out to be really good at guilt tripping. Ed can’t say no.

there’s no way in hell Ling DOESN’T come, no matter what his advisors say (mostly, “no, your majesty, that’s absurd”) which means he has to bring a whole entourage of guards because no one’s going to let the Emperor of Xing run off across the desert to Nowhere, Amestris without protection, even if he does argue that having just Lan Fan with him will be enough (he also definitely tries to give Winry and Ed something absolutely ridiculous for their wedding gift, like a tiger or an elephant. Alphonse tries his best to talk him out of it.)

and as many people come, even more just send it letters and gifts. Dr. Marcoh and Dr. Knox send their congratulations. the miners from Yoleswell all chip in to send the new couple a gift (Mr. Halling jokes that Ed’s going to have to pay him back for that, with interest). Rose sends a heartfelt letter wishing them well, thanking Edward again for all he did, and giving them updates about Liore’s reconstruction.

and so many more

Ed stares at this mountain of gifts and letters with absolute confusion. Just complete bafflement. He had no idea he had that many friends. He honestly had no idea he touched that many other people’s lives, how many people there are out there that actually LIKE him.

He just kind of holds it all out to Winry and is like “what is this why are so many people sending us gifts I don’t get it” and Winry just looks at her dumb husband who has touched the lives of everyone he’s ever met, who so many people love, who’s so oblivious to his own worth and importance, who can’t possibly fathom being liked by that many people and just feels her love for him grow even more
