Ghostlings practicing their “you’re my guardian” speech in front of a shiny surface.
Ghostlings who watch guardians pass by and imagine them being theirs.
Ghostlings who search for hundreds of years and lose their voice when they find their destined partner.
Ghosts who seek out the speaker because their guardian is gone, “speaker i can’t find my guardian. Speaker there were so many hive and he threw me and the gate closed. Speaker I don’t know what to do” and then they become silent observers again, like all those years ago, watching ghosts turn up with their newly risen guardians and feeling envy and hate and so much grief.
Oh my god my heart
Alternately: other guardians adopting Ghosts who no longer have a Guardian. Guardians with with two or more ghosts and they give all of them equal amounts of attention and work. Guardians going on rescue/recovery missions to either save the fallen guardians or give their ghosts closure. Ghosts who no longer have guardians working in the city to decrypt golden age medical devices to help people, ghosts in the city telling the stories of the guardians to the children- how brave they are and how hard they work, and the sacrifices they make for them. How much they love them. Ghosts who actually get second chances and feel a calling and a pull towards the Traveler- who can sometimes manage to choose a new Guardian for them. Ghosts who learn to be happy again. Ghosts who are comforted by the speaker in ways only he can comfort them.
I always felt like the dead Ghosts in D1 were Ghosts of Guardians who never made it home. They were in the crevices we found them in because in their pain and sorrow of losing their Guardians, they just laid down to die.
This is always an interesting topic, because it does divide people fairly strongly. I also know this isn’t going to be the most popular opinion, as I know a good portion of the Fandom loves the Reef dearly. And that’s cool, but I also think it colors a lot of opinions somewhat unfairly. But here goes, anyhow.
I think the main thing to be taken from this is that Petra and Zavala butt heads so strongly because they *both* want to protect their people.
The issue is, they disagree on who their people are. Petra is loyal to the Reef, and seems to believe that’s where Zavala’s loyalties should also be, because he’s awoken.
But he says plainly and forthright that he is a guardian first and awoken second. His people are the people of Earth – exo, awoken, human.
It doesn’t mean he has no compassion for the Reef, because he plainly does. But he is someone who has lived centuries, starting with the darkest of the dark ages – where fighting off those fallen houses, hive gods and cabal tyrants was the only way to save lives. Centuries where the Awoken had time enough alone as a result to not just build adequately secure bases and fortresses, but expansive, luxuriously opulent cities for themselves…where only they were allowed to go. And then once they were revealed, had the grace to ask things like if people on earth ate mud.
For all that they claim to be the protectors of earth, the Reef gained that time off the blood, sweat, tears and deaths of earth’s people, who dealt with the brunt of multiple invasive forces…as the Reef was busy picking out what carat gold to plate their cities and heavily locked gates in. Gates they only open when they want the help of the very people they’ve looked down on, turned away, and were, as Petra shows us, *angry* Earth’s people had dared tried to protect themselves and their home.
And Zavala knows as much, too. And despite how many deaths he must have seen as a result, deaths he personally suffered even in the present day, when that same complex directly resulted in Cayde being murdered…he still ultimately chooses to help the Reef.
Big blue has made plenty of mistakes, he’s said as much himself. There are things he genuinely needs to be called out on.
Him knowing who his people *really* are isn’t one of them.
*I’m using lesbians as a general term, as these ladies appear to be exclusively into other ladies, do not @ me.
I was asked to do a post about all the WLW in Destiny 2, mostly out of the hope that people will pull an Overwatch and possibly write some fic about them whether or not they play the game.
Note: A few of these characters are (currently) dead. Destiny’s timeline spans thousands and thousands of years, and as a result, not all of them have lived to the present day. They were still gay and awesome, though, so I have to include them. Destiny 2’s lead writer happens to be a lesbian too, and I feel like these cases were handled with care.
This is also a really long post, because I wanted to include all the canon I could find. Be warned if you’re opening it on mobile.
For anyone watching out, this post definitely has Forsaken spoilers under the cut. Lore entries are referenced from Ishtar Collective.
So let’s start with A for Ana. This is Ana Bray:
