“He didn’t want to disturb the silence as they rested against each other, hurting and relaxed, listening to the hum of machinery and the distant billowing of fires. He stowed thoughts of old missions and thoughts of the future away; decided to focus on what he could see and hear and smell for the last moments of his life on Scarif.”

are you with me?
all the way.
IMO, the single most important line for Cassian’s characterization is
Everything I did, I did for the rebellion. And every time I walked away from something I wanted to forget I told myself it was for a cause I believed in. A cause that was worth it.
The second most important isn’t his at all, but Chirrut’s:
There is more than one sort of prison, captain. I sense that you carry yours wherever you go.
I do find the second particularly interesting, because Cassian looks more shocked than surprised. That is, it doesn’t seem like an epiphany for him. It’s not what Chirrut reveals about his psyche that weirds him out; it’s that Chirrut is revealing things about his psyche at all.
I’ve jokingly called Cassian a psychological disaster area, which he is (:P). But it’s possible that Cassian himself is entirely aware of it.
#i’m also sort of interested by the fact that#i mean – this is one of the first things chirrut says to him#and it’s certainly sympathetic#but overall chirrut seems the most neutral on cassian#jyn must have trusted him to be so horribly betrayed; bodhi is grateful; baze thinks he looks friendly#but chirrut is just… okay on a scale of 1-10 how murdery does he look? asking for a friend#and while he’s judgy after eadu (like everyone; i think that feeds the fandom tension) he’s never at all hostile to him#he just quietly recognizes that cassian is something trapped and dangerous

Your father would have been proud of you, Jyn.
No! What’ve you done? Are you crazy? I’ll never climb out of here. My arm…
From charming and relaxed to cold and vicious to shock and disbelief to self-loathing and awareness to determination. All in the course of, what, 5 – 10 seconds and 8 words only spoken at the beginning.
He is such a good actor.
“It was always a circle, from our hero’s family home to an underworld to the rallying of the tropes, and Gareth always wanted to get Jyn back home again; it starts with the home and end with (a metaphorical) home.” – The Art of Rogue One, Josh Kushins
I’m not used to people sticking around when things go bad.
